27 or 32 inches? Size is not the right question
Two monitors of different sizes can display exactly the same workspace, or the same number of pixels with opposite sharpness. What really decides is density: the number of pixels per inch. Here is how to choose without going wrong.
The essentials
The rule in three lines
If you only remember one thing before ordering.
- 27 inches: the safest format. In 5K it reaches 218 ppi, Retina density, at the lowest price in the high-density range. It is the default choice for a workstation.
- 32 inches: excellent in 6K, acceptable in 4K, never in between. In 6K you keep Retina sharpness with a third more space; in 4K you drop to 139 ppi, which stays comfortable but is no longer Retina at all.
- 21:9 (34 and 40 inches): to be chosen for width, not for fineness. A single monitor replaces two side by side, without the bezel in the middle.

What each format really gives
The same number of inches can hide two very different experiences.
| Format | Resolution | Density | Workspaceat the usual scaling | For whom | Models |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 27" 5K | 5120 × 2880 | 218 ppi | 2560 × 1440 | Text, code, design, photo | G27P, G27X SE, P27Z |
| 32" 6K | 6144 × 3456 | 223 ppi | 3072 × 1728 | Editing, two windows side by side | G32P, G32X |

Workspace at 200% for high-density panels, at 100% for the others.
The 4K 32-inch trap
This is the most common confusion. A 32-inch 4K displays as many pixels as a 27-inch 4K, but spread over a larger surface: density falls from 163 to 139 ppi. In practice everything looks bigger, and the grain of the image becomes noticeable if you sit close to the screen.
Is that a fault? Not necessarily. At 139 ppi the interface reads perfectly at 100%, with no scaling at all: you therefore have a real workspace of 3840 × 2160, which is considerable. It is the right choice for anyone who wants plenty of room and a large image, and the wrong choice for anyone after crisp text.
The conclusion is simple: at 32 inches, if sharpness matters, you have to move to 6K.
How far away do you work?
Density is never judged in absolute terms, but relative to your viewing distance. Three reference points:
- Shallow desk, monitor at 50 cm: a 32-inch forces you to sweep the room with your eyes. The 27-inch is more comfortable, and its high density is fully appreciated at that distance.
- Standard desk, monitor at 70 cm: the 32-inch comes into its own, and the density gap between 4K and 6K becomes less visible, without disappearing on fine text.
- Monitor on an arm, set back beyond a metre: large formats and 21:9 become natural.
One large monitor or two monitors?
The question mainly arises from 32 inches upwards. Two 27-inch monitors offer more total surface and let you dedicate one screen to a task; they do impose a bezel in the centre of your field of view and two sets of settings to align.
A 40-inch 21:9 like the P40K offers 5120 pixels of width on a single panel: that is the width of two 27-inch monitors, without the break. For video editing, a wide spreadsheet or a development environment, the difference in comfort is real. For compartmentalised work, video call on one side, documents on the other, two separate monitors remain more practical.
And the footprint?
A 27-inch is about 62 cm wide, a 40-inch 21:9 nearly 96 cm. Measure your desk before ordering: it is trivial, and yet it is the leading cause of returns. Think about the available depth too, since a large monitor needs distance to be comfortable.
Every model accepts a VESA 100 × 100 mount, which lets you put it on an arm and reclaim the desk surface; see the stands and mounts guide.
FAQ
27 or 32 inches: frequently asked questions
Should you choose a 27 or a 32-inch?
27 inches in 5K if crisp text comes first: 218 ppi, Retina density, at the best price. 32 inches if you need space, but then in 6K to keep that sharpness, or in 4K accepting 139 ppi, which stays comfortable for a larger display without scaling.
Is a 32-inch 4K less crisp than a 27-inch 4K?
Yes, at equal distance. Both display the same number of pixels, but the 32-inch spreads them over a larger surface: 139 ppi against 163 ppi. In return, the interface is directly legible at 100% on the 32-inch, which frees up a real workspace of 3840 × 2160.
Does an ultrawide monitor replace two monitors?
For continuous work, editing, wide spreadsheets, development, yes, and without the central bezel. For compartmentalised tasks such as a video call on one side and documents on the other, two separate monitors remain more practical, because each can be angled independently.
What size for a small desk?
27 inches. Beyond that the viewing distance becomes insufficient and you sweep the screen with your eyes instead of taking it in at a glance. A 27-inch is about 62 cm wide; mounted on a VESA arm, it also frees up the whole desk surface.
What is the ideal density?
About 110 ppi for a conventional display at 100%, and about 220 ppi for Retina rendering with 2× scaling. Intermediate values, around 140 to 165 ppi, work very well but force the system into a non-integer scaling calculation.
